Family Tree

Born only with the ability to channel the male half of the One Power, Edelweiss has all her life been an anomoly. A trick by the Dark One, meant to confuse the prophesies and render the Dragon Reborn useless, Edelweiss, her twin brother Amed D'Tarig'Nal, and Rand Al'Thor were each born with a part of Lews Therrin's soul. All three bore the Heron marks on the palms and wore the Dragons on their arms. It wasn't until the Aes Sedai as a whole said this needed to be stopped that anything could be done. Because there were so many legitimate Dragon Potentials, there were too many Ta'varen as well. The Aes Sedai got all the Ta'varen in one place and had them reweave the pattern to make the Dragon whole in one of the three Potentials. Amed and Rand both felt they were not ready, didn't want to take it, couldn't deal with destiny bein shoved down their throats, couldn't deal with having to die fighting the Dark One to save the world. Only Edelweiss was willing to take the responsibility, and to deal with the madman in her head, but the others insisted that the Dragon must be a man. In the end, Amed agreed to bear the burden, and he became the Dragon Reborn.

In the city of Ruhidine, Edelweiss discovered her true potential. The Dark One had blocked her ability to channel the female half of the One Power, but the city destroyed that block. Since she could now channel both halves, she also had access to the True Source, which is both and neither.

An Aes Sedai of the White Tower and an Asha Man of the Black Tower, Edelweiss, in her own way, serves both and neither. All her life, she'd been something else, something unexpected, something impossible. Hopefully, the Dark One's forces will be just as surprized by her as the rest of the world was. After all, one of the most frightening things in the world is to see one an experiment turn on its creator. The Dark One thought he was confusing his enemies. Instead, he's only made them stronger.

Ok, So, Edelweiss is raised by a Tailor and his wife (they're both clearly not related to her, but whatever, she's young and trusting and all). The wife dies of pneumonia while carrying what they had all hoped would be a little brother. Oh, bother. Then her Uncle (or at least the guy who says he's her Uncle, although he bears no resembelance whatsoever to her and little to no resemblance to her mother or father, but whatever...) starts teaching her swordplay, and she gets fairly good at it. Then Uncle gets offed by some Trollocs on his morning outing. Edelweiss finds the body, gets pissed, and the wooden sword she's carrying bursts into scary magic flames. Much Trolloc whooping ensues.

So when Dad hears about this he lets some Aes Sedai check little Edelweiss out, but they don't see any wilder spark or anything and therefore care less about her than the ground they walk on. Edelweiss, trying to figure the whole mess out, assumes that the crazy magical power she has has nothing to do with the One Source or whatever, and guesses that Uncle's ghost is keeping an eye on her. And that Uncle's ghost kicks some serious ass.

So life is ok for a while, and then this crazy guy with bright red hair comes into the shop, speaking some language she's never heard of and making funny hand gestures. Then he slips out back behind the shop. Assuming he's trying to break in the back and steal whatever they've got, Edelweiss tells her Dad she'll check it out. The guy's just sulking out there, apparently waiting for her to show up. They get to talking for a bit, and he claims she comes from the same backwards place he does, and Edelweiss gets confused. Then someone walks into the front of the shop looking for Edelweiss, and when her Dad says he doesn't know where she is, he's gutted like so many salmon on the docks. This is what we like to call a "bad thing." At this point she gets tacked on to the group at large.

As an interesting side note, Edelweiss was named by the mother who raised her. She was named after a small white flower as a joke, seeing as she was never little or pale. What's interesting is that when she was young, they took to shortening the name to "Weiss" which, depending on pronunciation, means either "white" or the verb "know".
