Raised in Edmond's Field in the Two Rivers, Rand was largely ignorant of the outside world, until tragedy struck, and Moraine Sedai discovered his potential. A trick by the Dark One, meant to confuse the prophesies and render the Dragon Reborn useless, Rand, Amed D'Tarig'Nal, and his twin sister Edelweiss Wasserman D'Tarig'Nal were each born with a part of Lews Therrin's soul. All three bore the Heron marks on the palms and wore the Dragons on their arms. It wasn't until the Aes Sedai as a whole said this needed to be stopped that anything could be done. Because there were so many legitimate Dragon Potentials, there were too many Ta'varen as well. The Aes Sedai got all the Ta'varen in one place and had them reweave the pattern to make the Dragon whole in one of the three Potentials. Amed and Rand both felt they were not ready, didn't want to take it, couldn't deal with destiny being shoved down their throats, couldn't deal with having to die fighting the Dark One to save the world. While his sister voulenteered to take up the role of the Dragon, Amed agreed with the others that it would be difficult enough to convince people to follow someone who resembles their idea of what the Dragon should be, let alone getting them to follow and Aiel woman raised in the Wetlands, who channels the male half of the source. In the end, Amed agreed to bear the burden, and he became the Dragon Reborn.
While he at first assumed he would want to go right back home as soon as all this mess was taken care of, Rand found himself unable to escape the coming conflict, and the role he had to play in it. Trained at the Black Tower by Masrim Taim, Rand was quickly raised to the rank of Asha Man. Returning with the Dragon and his followers to Edmond's Field to battle an army of Trollocs amassing there, Rand soon was romantically entangled with Raseine Sedai.
