Remember the good old days when you could launch an internet company from your garage and make millions? Remember when it was still considered points off your social status if you could code? Most people don't. AOL has brought the internet to millions who don't have the drive to understand things like "code" and basic html, but want to play with all the goodies the geeks made for them. Places like Homestead (hiss!) and, yes, even my host, Freeservers, have broken down yet another barrier between the intelectual haves and have nots. Did you know that not only can any idiot sign up for a free website, they'll even build the damn thing for them. To make a site on freeservers all you have to do it point at what it to look like and type in some content. (of course, you can also do what I've done, type up your code at home and upload it) At homestead, they won't even let you do that! The internet is not being made more accesible, it's being dumbed down. There was a time when having a website meant you had some understanding of computers, code, and the internet. That time is over. AOLies get a free page when they sign up!
I am considering starting a "save the code" society. A bunch of people dedicated to using only hand crafted code, staying up until one am getting the bugs worked out. That's what the personal site is supposed to be about. Not how quickly you can throw one up or how many goodies you can paste in from html gear and Angelfire (hiss!) but a way to show that you are capable of typing up something that can catch someone's interest; that you've worked hard and learned the tags you need to make the site run the way you want, that you sat in front of that monitor until it actually ran. The personal site used to be a triumph of an individual's knowledge and perseverance. It is now something some idiot AOLie threw up in five minutes because his friend had one.
Ok, I'm done.
No, I don't hate AOLies, I just wish they would go pull some termites out of a log for themselves so us geeks don't have to feed them, too.
Yes, I realize that Anita's Poke site was originally made from the freeservers template, and I've used things from htmlgear and stolen code off of a friend's angelfire site. Poo to you. If anyone I knew could code polls, I'd do it myself. k?
You can go away now.
