I am so tired of this

I'm tired of companies breaking, folding, cutting back, losing ground, and selling out. I am tired of being promised something for life and having it cut off. I am tired of the internet being an unstable place to conduct business, conversation, and whatever else. I miss the days when technology was free to those who didn't mind some ads in their face and profits were something hazy and distant, and all were content for the world to be so. I miss a time when information was more valuable than the dollar. I miss the dreams of the internet.

Where did it's childhood go?

Ancient sites, my first online community, shut down. Altavista and Mail.com keep messing with where my email is and erased all my saved files (the BASTARDS!) and 50 megs has decided that they can't give away 50megs any more. A personal site falling behind, into disrepair, or even dissapearing is one thing, but when the corperations are f?(/ing up and going back on the promises they made to the rest of us, there's something damn wrong with the universe. Maybe not the universe, maybe just the internet. There is no more innocence, there are no more "exciting" IPOs of companies that can't possibly expect to turn a profit, and yet are making millions off the net, just 'cause they're online, and that's exciting. It's not exciting anymore. Computers aren't for hackers, geeks, and the super-intelligent anymore, even the stupid ones are online, trading doctored photos of celebrities. Being online is not a status symbol anymore. Being online is normal, everyday, which means it's finally time to pay the piper. Time to apply the logistics of the real world to the fairy tale of the internet, the triumph of technology. It's time to make this another dirty, expensive part of everyday life, instead of a power trip. There is no freedom from fees, corporate, or big brother. Computers, unfortunately, cannot save us from our dismal future, but there was that hope, just for a few quick years, that we could make the world a better place, a more conected, friendly, functional place. It's dead, now. Time to pay for your free web space, turn in your tye dye mouse pad and iMac, and start thinking practicaly. After all, it's not like it's anything new anymore. The revolution's over, it's time to pick up the pieces and go back to tilling the fields.

Whatever happened to hope?
